A Mini Holiday

Embroidery + appliqué art by Joanne Burke

At this time of year, winter begins to feel never-ending. If you can’t escape the cold physically, then run off to the dreamland created in the works of embroidery artist, Joanne Burke. Her magical pieces combine appliqué and embroidery to depict fantasy worlds reminiscent of Aubrey Beardsley. Weeping harps, powdered wigs and masked clowns are a few of the themes found in her work under the moniker, Chromium Dumb Belle. Originally from England, this British rose now calls Portland, Oregon home. Her illustrations have appeared on the runway for the re-launch of the Biba label and can be found in Biba Dolls, a book she also authored. – Jessie
