Gems from the Past | The Films of Kenneth Anger

Lucifer Rising Kenneth Anger, Background Art Hendrik Hegray

I just ran across a collection of Kenneth Anger’s films featuring his work from the early 60s thru the 80s. An avant-garde film pioneer, Anger mixes his love for the supernatural into much of his cinematic work. Lucifer Rising, shot in the 70s, references the iconology of Egypt with symbols popping up throughout the film. My favorite is the long, satin, pyramid-adorned coat shown above. Also, check out the work of French artist, Hendrik Hegray, who uses this movie as inspiration for a series of illustrations in his publication of the same name. Ahead of his time, Anger’s films, especially Lucifer Rising, feel quite appropriate for the current trends of the day.
