Marbled prints and tie-dye seem to be back in the spotlight—and not just on t-shirts and tapestries. Hippie-esque themes have also reemerged in the upcoming film Taking Woodstock and broadway musical Hair, and love and peace signs have marched their way back into the world of prints.

So, what exactly is marbling? Marbling is a method of aqueous surface design, in which paper or fabric is decorated by manipulating floating paints and dyes to create a swirled, marble-reminiscent effect. The result—colorful, organic, dynamic patterns, much like tie dye—appearing on everything from wallpaper and stationery to leggings and apparel.
