Mixing science with art, Los Angeles based organization, The Institute for Figuring, is blurring the borders with their current Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef project. Entirely constructed out of wool, bits of plastic and beads, the crocheted pieces take on a form much like that found in nature. Australian sisters, Margaret and Christine Wertheim, co-created The Institute of Figuring as a means to express “the poetic and aesthetic dimensions of science, mathematics and the technical arts.”

The Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef combines the work of numerous contributors from around the world, including the creations of the illusive Dr. Axt. This impressive body of art has been showcased at The Hayward Gallery in London, and most recently can be found in Los Angeles at Track 16 Gallery through the end of February. – Jessie
