Aaron Rothman | Nothing But Flowers
InspirationThere was a shopping mall
Now it’s all covered with flowers
you’ve got it, you’ve got it
If this is paradise
I wish I had a lawnmower
you’ve got it, you’ve got it
–Talking Heads, (Nothing But) Flowers
You know those spaces where nature and man-made collide? The median strip in the center of a roadway or the edge of a development that spills into wilderness becomes the subject matter for artist, Aaron Rothman. For this series, Nothing But Flowers, Rothman digitally removes anything not illuminated by sunlight to create meadow-like patterns of nature. The flat use of color attempts to freeze the elements with the hope of bringing order to the uncontrolled chaos of the natural world.
Rothman explores contemporary issues in landscape throughout his work. He is also a photo editor at Places Journal, where he curates art and photography, in addition to writing essays on the themes of architecture, landscape, and urbanism.
