INSPIRATION: Marimekko
Inspiration
Ever since I saw photos of women with long flowing hair, romping through the wilderness in pseudo psychedelic caftans, I have been hooked on Marimekko! The rest of the world has been hooked since the 1950’s, when the Finnish textile firm came onto the scene with their fashions and interiors. Marimekko has the power to wrap up so many contradictory elements into one sellable package. Their products can be described as industrial art, urban, organic, geometric and natural all at the same time. No matter how the world chooses to see Marimekko, one thing is for sure, if you are looking for statement pieces, you have found them.
Though not spotted often enough stateside, Marimekko’s presence is still alive and felt the world over. In recent years they have brought designer print and pattern to the masses with a collaborated collection at H&M, and can be found currently in stores like Crate and Barrel and Anthropologie. Here in Portland you can even buy their printed fabrics from NE Alberta’s Bolt, and make your own Marimekko inspired creations. Happy Hunting!
