Delftware Tile

With a heyday in the 17th and 18th centuries, Delftware returns to influence art, fashion and interiors. This classic blue and white patterned pottery from the Netherlands originally took its form as simple household items such as plates, in addition to more decorative pieces like tiles. With an estimated 800 million tiles produced during its two hundred years of popularity, Delft potters left their mark on the interiors of many Dutch homes whose walls still proudly wear the blue and white ceramics.

Today, Dutch architect, Rem Koolhaas, reinterprets Delftware for Portugal’s Casa da Música, juxtaposing the historic tiles with modern architectural touches. But, the influence of this pottery doesn’t stop there. The runways over the last few seasons have been awash with shades of blue and white. Check out our earlier post on this trend here. Thanks to designers such as Roberto Cavalli and Valentino, the popularity of this classic style is being renewed.
