Tonsorial Art
InspirationI remember first running across the slightly creepy world of hair art in an antique store. Popular during Victorian times, women would weave hair of their dear ones into intricate flower shapes, knots and patterns that would then be framed or worn as a brooch. Often an act of mourning, these delicate woven treasures became a symbol of love and remembrance. Fast forward to the 21st Century and the art of weaving hair has taken on a new appeal. Known for her work with Bjork, Hrafnhildur Arnardottir aka Shoplifter, creates woven sculptures, patterns and more using hair. Her recent collaboration with VPL has lead to a series of wearable pieces ranging from necklaces to capelets and even a romper.
How beautiful are these. I wonder how one cares for the woven ones?
