The SS16 collection from London label, Bruta, captures the whimsy of Matisse in embroidered unisex shirts and hand-painted pots. Founder, Arthur Yates, started the brand in 2015 after combining his two loves – art and fashion. With no formal training, Yates draws inspiration from traditional crafts and culture to create limited edition pieces. In an interview for the SS16 launch at Liberty, he mentions his thoughts behind the brand:

“I’ve always liked shirts; I’ve got a big collection of vintage shirts and my girlfriend always borrowed them from me, so it made sense to make a unisex brand. I see the shirts as something you decorate your body with, and I wanted to create something to decorate your home so I made the pots. I like the idea of doing something one-off too, so the pots are all hand-painted. I was drawn to the chaos of that, and I feel like that’s something missing from fashion.”

Bruta’s link to the art world shines through in its pieces, giving the product integrity and personality. Its current collection gives a nod to embroidered western shirts from the 1940s, incorporating loose hand painted or hand cut elements for a look that would make Matisse proud.
